Role details

About Persperion

Persperion Diagnostics is developing a new way to monitor metabolic health through touch-based sweat sensing, starting with glucose.

Our first product, the ConTAQ Sweat Glucose Monitor, is designed to replace much of the pain and inconvenience of traditional fingerstick glucose testing. Our technology uses a reusable, solid-state electrochemical sensor to measure naturally occurring fingertip perspiration with a simple touch.

We are a small, highly technical team working at the intersection of electrochemistry, biosensors, materials science, medical devices, and manufacturing. As we move from R&D prototypes toward product validation, clinical studies, and scalable manufacturing, we are looking for someone who enjoys working with their hands, running careful experiments, and solving difficult technical problems.

Position Summary

We are looking for a Sensor Development Scientist / Technician to join our R&D team and help develop, fabricate, characterize, and improve our electrochemical biosensors.

This is a highly hands-on laboratory role. You will work directly with sensor fabrication, chemistry preparation, electrochemical testing, data analysis, and troubleshooting. You will also help us build increasingly robust experimental methods and processes as our sensor transitions from research toward a commercial medical device.

The exact title and scope will depend on experience. A Technician-level hire will focus more heavily on reliable experimental execution and data collection, while a Scientist-level hire will also be expected to independently design studies, interpret results, investigate mechanisms, and propose next experiments.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate and prepare electrochemical sensors using established laboratory procedures and evolving R&D processes.
  • Prepare buffers, artificial sweat solutions, enzymes, polymers, proteins, and other sensor chemistry formulations with high accuracy and consistency.
  • Perform electrochemical characterization using techniques such as chronoamperometry, cyclic voltammetry, impedance measurements, and related methods.
  • Execute structured experiments evaluating sensor sensitivity, repeatability, stability, reuse, shelf life, interference, and environmental robustness.
  • Study how materials, formulations, coating conditions, processing parameters, and test conditions affect sensor performance.
  • Analyze experimental data, identify trends and anomalies, and help determine root causes of sensor failures or performance variation.
  • Design and execute experiments to improve sensor performance and manufacturing robustness.
  • Maintain clear, accurate, and traceable laboratory records, including experimental conditions, sample and lot information, raw data, observations, and conclusions.
  • Help develop and improve SOPs, work instructions, test methods, and sensor QC procedures.
  • Maintain laboratory materials, reagents, equipment, sensor inventory, and experimental samples in an organized manner.
  • Work closely with R&D, engineering, quality, regulatory, and manufacturing team members as the sensor progresses toward design verification and manufacturing transfer.
  • Communicate results clearly in technical discussions, presentations, and written summaries.

Experience

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Nanoengineering, Materials Science, or a related scientific or engineering field; equivalent hands-on laboratory experience may be considered for Technician-level candidates.
  • Strong hands-on wet-lab skills and comfort spending a significant portion of the workday conducting experiments.
  • Experience accurately preparing solutions, pipetting, handling small quantities of materials, and following experimental protocols.
  • Strong attention to detail and appreciation for reproducibility and experimental controls.
  • Ability to organize, analyze, and interpret quantitative experimental data.
  • Strong laboratory documentation and recordkeeping habits.
  • Ability to troubleshoot experiments rather than simply repeat a protocol when something does not work as expected.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small, fast-moving team while also independently managing assigned experiments.
  • Willingness to work on-site.

Preferred

  • Experience with electrochemistry or electrochemical characterization.
  • Experience developing electrochemical, enzymatic, or other biosensors.
  • Experience with electrode modification, polymer coatings, thin films, surface chemistry, or biomolecule immobilization.
  • Experience with enzymes, proteins, hydrogels, membranes, or polymeric materials.
  • Experience with experimental design, statistical analysis, or Design of Experiments (DOE).
  • Experience troubleshooting sensor sensitivity, drift, repeatability, stability, or manufacturing variation.
  • Experience developing or validating laboratory test methods.
  • Experience with medical devices, diagnostics, design controls, ISO 13485, GLP, or other regulated product-development environments.
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, JMP, Minitab, or similar data-analysis tools.

What Success Looks Like

Within your first few months, you should be able to independently fabricate and test sensors using our standard procedures, generate reproducible and well-documented data, and recognize when experimental results fall outside expectations.

As you develop in the role, we expect you to take ownership of increasingly complex studies, identify sources of sensor variability, recommend experiments to answer technical questions, and contribute directly to improvements in sensor performance and manufacturing robustness.

For Scientist-level candidates, success will also include independently designing experimental plans, developing technical hypotheses, interpreting mechanisms behind sensor behavior, and helping translate R&D findings into product specifications and controlled processes.

Why Join Persperion

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Work on a technically challenging biosensor platform with the potential to change how people monitor their health.
  • See your experiments directly influence a real medical product.
  • Work across the full development cycle—from fundamental sensor chemistry through product development, clinical validation, and manufacturing.
  • Learn from an experienced team in electrochemical biosensing, medical devices, and entrepreneurship.
  • Take meaningful ownership early and grow with the company as the technical organization expands.
  • Work in a startup environment where good experiments can quickly translate into product decisions.
